There a several reasons why your laptop is freezing. Also a bit more information would help to narrow down the problem. But, I will try to cover all the most common reason for computer lockups.

First question is when was the last time you cleaned your registry. Having a corrupted registry can cause a whole host of errors and problems. Freezing up is one of them. If you have a lot of unnecessary registry keys that are hogging up your computer resources. Your computer is bound to choke.

2. Depending on your RAM specs and your computer usage. This could also be a the issue. Having an insufficient amount of free space does not allow your RAM to function properly. If you are using a lot of RAM by net surfing or other activities without enough empty space your will get freezes. You don't need to buy new RAM but you should increase your free space by removing unnecessary data and perhaps increasing your virtual memory. The below link will show you how.

3. You have spyware could be the culprit, so do a scan and see if your computer is infected.

4. That last area is a hardware drivers. But I don't think this is your problem unless you have added new hardware recently. So, the drivers should still be up to date. So try the first two suggestion and see if you can get your computer to stop freezing. Hope this helps.

It could freeze up by having too many things running, which takes up a lot of RAM, you could have a virus or spyware, or your laptop may just be too old. Some solutions....
1. Close programs that you are not using, this also includes ones in the system tray
2.Buy more RAM
3.Run a spyware scan
4. Call customer support for your laptop
5. Get a new laptop.
Also, if your laptop freezes up on you, you do not have to take the battery out to restart it, just press and hold the power button until it turns off, give it about 30 seconds for the disks to spin down, and then turn it back on again.

Freeze ups are USUALLY software problems, but give us more info. I would run an antivirus and antispyware IN SAFE MODE. I would go into msconfig/startup and uncheck aps that are not supposed to be there, I would check processes, UNINSTALL AOL (not just through add/remove, but delete all keys from registry) make sure you do no have more than one antivirus. Check event log for errors. Update drivers, etc. The fact that a reboot helps, pretty much proves it's not a hardware issue. Remove all "red flag" software like free screen savers, cute smilies, free games, incredimail, weatherbug, etc

no need to take out the battery, just press the power button for about 5 to 7 seconds and it will switch off.
