Emotion is a physiological event first. So the first thing necessary is to release it from the body. Anger is stored in the large muscles of the upper arms and shoulders, so any strenuous exercise that works those muscles such as punching a punching bag or pillows, chopping wood, swinging a hoe, etc will release the emotion. Massage can do this also.
After you've released the physical component, drawing, playing music, writing a journal, talking, ritual cleansing etc are all ways to resolve the emotional residue of anger, to gain insight into the cause of the anger, and to learn from it.

The process can be described as making the self angry and then suppressing and then returning to do it over and over again.
"Letting out" pent up anger is one approach. Another approach is not to create the anger.
A good question is "how am I making myself angry?" And then to stop.

Anger is a product of the limbic system; it usually requires some kind of physical action to "get over it". That's because the limbic system, in gearing you up to deal with anger, gives you chemicals to fight. If you don't fight, the chemicals are still there, screwing with your system! Get them out. Go work out. Run. Scream, hit something dense and soft.

sure....i always draw dark drawings.....but i find the best way to get it out...is physically....take up kick boxing....or just go out into a forest or somewhere else in nature and scream until your lungs give out and you pass out from exhaustion....
it's the same thing with grief and sadness....let the emotion spew out into the open so it doesn't rot and spoil your soull.......it'll do a hell of a lot...believe me

writing is very cathartic. Keep a journal and when you are having emotional swings, write about it. It helps.
