BTW the supply and demand aspect of oil is BS in large part. It is in no way a free enterprise market.
Consolidation of the major companies have turned the oil business into a near monopoly.
Remember they told us that the Enron energy crisis was supply and demand problem as well when the were diverting energy and forcing power plants to close.

If you mean why do WE the AMERICAN CONSUMER all drive overpowered or too large vehicles, and drive in the least efficient manner, I don't know, I ask myself that all the time Tonight I walked the 8/10th a mile to the local market and saw my neighbor going there too, in her Hummer H2...WHY DIDN'T SHE WALK, talk about serving big oil!
And please, don't blame Bush on your consumption practices, it's us that are to blame. Price is a function of supply and DEMAND, we control the demand.

Because like it or not it is the fuel that drives our economy. That's not to say that we shouldn't be doing everything we can to change that, but at the moment it's reality.
