Put a very large pan of water on the stove and bring it to a boil. Pick up an 'sealed envelope' and wave it in the 'steam' coming off the water and when the glue is 'soft enough' you should be able to 'safely separate' it with a 'dinner knife' or butter knife ... go 'slowly' and be sure to set the envelopes so that they can't 'seal up' again ... and you may need to 'tape them' shut after this, or use 'stickers' but you'll have 'good as new' envelopes for just a 'little' of your time ... and after this, be sure to keep your envelopes in a 'cool, dry place' where they can't 'seal up' on their own again.

I have never done this, but I read you can zap them in a microwave for a few seconds to loosen the glue. I would try this with an unimportant envelope first.

If the are the 'lick' kind you can hold them over steam.
One at a time and short enough that the paper will not get wet.
An old-fashioned tea kettle will be easiest to use.

It is easy with some steam, put them one by one above any source of steam, and they will open it for sure. salù

You could try ironing one envelope under medium heat ~ no steam ~ and see if that works! http://patty.planetmitchell.com/discuss/msgReader$863
