I have an 8mg broadband adsl connection in my home in the UK, i can only upload at a max speed of 40k, is there any way i can upgrade my broadband connection i.e satellite? any help on the subject would be helpful, maybe i can ring up BT and ask to increase the gain on the line?

This is unlikely to be a line problem, BT won't put 8M on a bad line, they test before activating adsl. Remember too that the maximum upload bandwidth on any adsl will be 500K or 1M. You do have to deal with very high contention rates on any UK broadband, this means there can be fifty people in your area all fighting for bandwidth. Check your machine for unneeded programmes running, check your settings are not blocking. How are you uploading, ftp or browser?

The upload speed is controlled by the connection at the other end There is nothing you can do to improve it.

Satellite is download side the upload side still uses the telephone line
You could subscribe to SDSL instead of ADSL but the cost is not worth it.
The gain has nothing to do with the speed in the way you want.

Thats your max upload limit, you wont get anymore from BT unless you change to a business broadband package.

from what i have seen sat is no better than dsl. i would suggest checking your connections hardware and modem not good when your slower than dialup. and also keep in mind your speed also depends on the wiring in your home and the wiring from your home to the main hub. and so on

Well, I know Google has a web accelerator for broadband connections.

Here's the link if you're interested.

call around to your local cable/dsl providers and see what the upstream cap is on their best package.
