The symbol is generally thought to originate from the Latin quæstio, meaning "question", which was abbreviated to Qo. The uppercase Q was written above the lowercase o, and this mark was transformed into the modern symbol.

Not known for sure. One theory is that scribes would put Qo after a question - stood for Latin 'Questio' maening question. As time went by, they started writng the 'Q' over the 'o' to save space, ond over time that evolved into ?.
