Emperor is a higher rank than king. In the Christian world kings were crowned by archbishops and emperors could be crowned only by the Pope, if I remember correctly. Non-Catholic countries had different words for rulers, such as tenno (Japanese), sultan (Ottoman & Arabic), tsar (Russian), these are often translated either as emperor or as king.
Eric54: Kings can be rulers over several nations too. Most European countries in the Middle Ages were multiethnic.

Historically, the term emperor was used to refer to a leader who had other hereditary monarch under his dominion. For example, when the British monarch was Emperor of India, that was because there were several regional monarchies in India that were under his control.
Nowadays, the only world leader that uses the title Emperor is Akihito of Japan, and the title is essentially a relic from when the Japan was more powerful than it is today and had an empire.
