Excellent question...
Because this country is led by a group of people that believe the imaginary person in the sky will punish us.
The religious right make the decisions in this country, it is amazing, I personally don't care, let them have a marriage, get divorced, etc...

Sadly, the answers given in this thread are correct...
Everyone's education on this earth is prejudiced. In fact, you could probably say that education is the very process of instilling prejudice. Of course, some values are stronger than others.
Each person's education is prejudiced against thinking a certain way. As a scientist, I sometimes ask philisophical questions without rigerous answers and I get lightly dismissed. The same thing goes with other types of education. In fact, some people are taught not to think about moral questions at all. That's why people can believe anything.
People will impose their ideals whether they've thought about them or not on other people.
May the wind be always at your back

Because in most states, like Oregon, the law states that marriage is the bond between one man and one woman. If you look in most dictionaries, the first definition in there (first line): the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc.
So, when others go in and try to change things such as laws, and how we live our lives in our home towns, yeah, it does change things for the rest of us.
As for that little thing about "seperation of church and state".....well, let me see here....
Separation of church and state is a political and legal doctrine which states that government and religious institutions are to be kept separate and independent of one another. The term most often refers to the combination of two principles: secularity of government and freedom of religious exercise. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . . .
This law was put into the constitution to keep (at the time) the Catholic church of England from sticking their noses into the law, where we couldn't wrinkle our noses without the Pope or his priests knowing about it. That doesn't mean that we can't state what we believe in. I do believe that would be against another constitutional right.....freedom of belief for individuals and freedom of worship for individuals and groups.
Look it up for yourself. :)
And yes, I do have a few gay and lesbian friends. We have a mutal forray though. I don't force anything down their throats, and they do the same.

The same reason they oppose polygamy, pedophilia, and sex with corpses. It's immoral behavior. By itself it may not seem like such a big deal, but coupled with the breakdown of families, increased degradation of children and the general decline of moral order, it's one more nail in the coffin of AMERICA. Despite the ravings of lefties regarding the founding father's, this country was built on laws that reflect the teachings of Judeo/Christian values. Whether you believe in God or not, the belief in a higher set of values is critical to the survival of this country.

because throughout American history we have felt the need to degrade, deny, and repress any group of people we don't like. Indians, Blacks, Women, ect. Now it's is the gay and lesbians turn to be denied what they want simply because they have the "wrong kind of sex life."
I certainly know that my marriage won't fail or be valueless because a gay couple are married.

^^^ So f-ing what? Get over the "Adam and Steve" thing, and stop quoting bumper stickers.
It's their right. Why do people bring up God with America? Isn't is supposed to be "separation of church and state" ?
If you wanna believe in something that doesn't exist, that's your right to be stupid, don't force it on others.
EDIT: Since when did quoting a book mean that it's proof? I mean, it's a BOOK, how do you know it's true? It's FICTION.
There's the same validity if I quote something from Harry Potter, but we actually know the person who wrote that wasn't on drugs.

All societies are based on religions, which they cultivate fears and retribution for acts seeming un-normal.
I don't care about your sexual preferences,As long as you don't force them upon someone else.
Like when I was a young teen in FL.,hitch hiking.it seems to me they were trolling the Junior high school area, looking for potential pray.
Act such as this I would like to see a death penalty.

marriage is a religious bonding - it is confused as a government tax deduction. Get rid of income tax and have a value added tax and you have no government concern on being gay. As to the church - it is the pope & god thing - Not my religion so I don't care

Thank you! I'm glad you are an intelligent person who sees through the lies others tell. People oppose it because they are told to. They are convinced that it is some horrid disease or something.
