easily a cummins equipped dodge. i live near e-one ( the fire engine maker) and theyre very strict about whose engine they will drop in a product. the isuzu ( chevy ) isnt even allowed in the parking lot. some models have an international ( ford ) but majority have a cummins, cat,or detroit ( which is owned by dodge ). the only transmission used is a allison. if you want a worry free driveline you can mount an allison 1000 behind a cummins with an adapter

RE:
What is the most reliable diesel engine pick up truck? (non-commercial use)?
Ford, chevy, dodge? What year? Any where from 2000 and earlyer models. Am looking for a reliable used work truck with a tight buget. All the forum has biased opionions and sticks with one maker and makes fun of the others.

I would choose a Dodge. I know of a guy who had a 96 Dodge and he hauled campers from the manufacture to the dealer and it was still running after 1,000,000+ miles. He had to put a couple injector pumps on it and a few other minor things. Then he used a Ford with the power stroke and it blow up after 500,000 miles so he got another 96 Dodge with 100,000+ miles since he had such good luck with the first one. Another thing I look at is the Dodge has 6 cylinders and injectors to deal with and a Ford has 8 so there may be less stuff there to go wrong. I made my own diesel pick up. I put a 453T Detroit diesel in a Chevy crew cab pick up. It is only 4 cylinders but it took me a couple months to do it. It has a 5 speed main transmission with a 3 speed auxiliary transmission.

while i have never been a particular fan of the blue oval the super duty's have proven them selves over and over again in rescue squad fleets everywhere the old 7.3's are tough the early 6.0's had some bugs but are ok now. the jury is out on the new twin turbo model but hopes and expectations are high , it is very powerful. i rekon i have grudgingly become a super duty fan .

dodge l6 cummins turbo diesel. but the ford turbo diesel is also good both better than (hate to say it) chevy. but diesel trucks are basically all expensive, if you make the initial investment to get one theyll last forever.
