Anyone can put a gallon of water on a scale but you should be thinking of the fundamental concept you are trying to learn.
Density is the weight per unit volume of a substance.
Density (D) = Weight (W) divided by the volume (V)
Another way to solve the equation is
Weight = Density x Volume
W=DxV
Density is usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot or grams per cubic centimeter (in the metric system)
You can look up the density of water on the internet or in a handbook (like the handbook of chemistry &physics)
Density of water is 1 gram/cubic centimeter or 62.5 pounds/cubic foot
Next you need to know the volume of a gallon.
Again you can look this up
One gallon is equal to
3785.4 cc
0.13368 cubic feet
Now you need to watch the units are consistant
Go back to the formula
Weight = Density times volume
You know the density and the volume
Weight = 0.13368 cubic feet times 62.5 pounds/cubic foor
Weight=8.35 pounds
One more thing about density.
It changes with temperature and pressure.
So to be correct you need to state this was calculated at STP
STP means Standard Temperature and Pressure
STP is about the same as saying room temperature and pressure.
If you were on the moon the same gallon of water would weigh less.

1 cup of water weighs 8 oz which is 1/2 a pound.

There are 16 cups in a gallon.

Each one weighs .5 pounds, so the gallon weighs 8 pounds.

16 * .5 = 8
