How does a bullhorn/megaphone make a louder than normal sound?

I need to know how it expands the volume of a voice to make it so much louder. thanks

It directs the sound waves in a narrow cone instead of letting them expand spherically, as they normally would. The intensity is about inversely proportional to distance instead of being inversely proportional to the square of distance.
