Do you just one day starting thinking that "Hey! I should cut myself because I'm sad." Or do you hear about it first so that the idea has been planted into your head and then you decide to try it?

Is it a self fulfilling prophecy where you heard about it and then tried and it worked because you believed it would?

Please note that I'm not asking IF it works. I'm asking if it was an original idea that the cutter came up with or they were infected with this idea by someone else/tv.

"They" have done that since the Stone Age and now we hear about it in the media. So I am right but you are too.

Personally I have no first hand experience with this. My sister did this though. It was a very hard thing to watch. She is a hypocondriac and has like every self diagnosed disorder in the book lol Like obsessive compulsive for example. Her "friends" are the same way. She heard of this and had seen this before. I believe the idea has always been there. She used knives and even pencil erasers to leave big open cuts on her skin. It was hard to watch her go through that. She is always depressed, but not because of our homelife. If her friend has an issue at home she makes it her own problem and is totally consumed with it. I believe in compassion and all and help whomever I can. She finally quit on her own. It seemed like when she was doing this her friends were calling alot more, and they were all in a click or something. Some is attention and some is just plain ol' venting. I don't know how to describe it. It may not be the same with everyone, but with her this is how it was. Take care and good question.

Adolescents may deliberately harm themselves for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes teenagers cut themselves to be part of a peer group. Often, self-cutting is a means of coping with emotional distress. It may be a call for help because of emotional issues or suicidal thoughts.

When you are really stressed out cutting does actually help some what. When you get angry or frustrated you heart pumps your blood faster, when you cut yourself it lets some of the anxiety out. Thus calming you down and your heart rate will go down.

I wish I knew because my nephew has started to do this. He gets drunk and starts giving himself tatoos by cutting himself. I am so afraid he's really going to hurt himself one of these times. I've talked to him, he's been to counseling and I'm lost as to what to do to help him. I just don't get it.
