Your question: "How do you play guitar?" is pretty general but let me give you a quick starting point. A good place to begin learning to play the guitar is by learning a couple of basic chords: G, C, and D for example.
Once you can change from one chord to another with your left hand begin thinking about strumming with your right hand (think of your strumming hand as your own personal drummer). Most songs are in what's called 4/4 time (pronounced "four four time"). This means that there is a 4 beat cycle that repeats over and over throughout the song (1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 etc.) Your right hand is used to touch the strings in relation to these beats.
Hopefully this is somewhat helpful but here is what would be better. Do you have a friend who knows how to play guitar well enough to get through a song without stopping? If so, get together with that person and ask him or her to explain to you how to play some basic chords (G, C, D, Em, and Am) write down diagrams of these chords so you can remember them after your get together. Ask this person to show you a simple "up and down" strumming pattern. Play around with these chords and strums until you are making some "good noise" (something that vaguely resembles a song). Once your fingers begin to move around the fretboard with some degree of comfort (there are dexterity exercises on www.playtheguitar.com that can help develop your left hand) ask around for a good guitar teacher in your area. A good teach will help you get going in the right direction while avoiding bad habits.
There are tons of good books for beginning guitarists Mel Bay and Hal Leonard both have good method books for beginners. There are lots of good websites with great guitar information too: www.acousticguitar.com is one of my favorites.

ok im gna b helpful hre.
its realy nt that hard. i just started playing guitar before christmas and now i play at gigs!
basically i started by learning a VERY easy song. 'Teenage kicks'. just look for guitar tabs on google and find teenage kicks. also to help you, download the song off of lime wire or another program like that so u can properly hear the song.
so simply, learn the rythm of the song from listning to it and then play the tabs along to the music. AND BE PATIENT!! it took me a while too but persistance is the key!!
once you master this song, i would advise you to learn 'Dammit' by Blink 182. :D

No. It's not that simple. You need to take a few lessons in order to learn the basics. Most people don't have the ability to just pick up any instrument and start playing at will. If it was that easy, it wouldn't be satisfying.

Tune wit a tuner before you play. From the top string down....E,A,D,G,B,E
Search the internet for "Guitar Tabs How To". Take the time to understand how to use the tabs then you can make cords. Keep your strumming to a steady beat.

playing a guitar is kind of hard.you need skills and training to play it. its like any other instrument...you just have to memorize the notes and play the right strings.. i dont no how 2 play 1 but mi dad duz. lol. u can take lessons. but its not that hard...(thats wut mi dad says)... u can learn it yourself. just get a guitar guide book and a guitar song book. thts practically it ! i hope u learn soon ! bi

I taught myself. I learned how to read tablatures, which basically tells you where to put your fingers on the fret board and play that note, or notes if it is a chord, and that's it. Taking lessons to learn the basics might not be a bad idea either.

pick up a guitar, figure out which hand comes more naturally to strum the strings and such, then getting a book or a video would be very beneficial...umm just strum a long and see what sounds good.
