hi everyone, i had my baby 7 weeks ago. i gained a bit of weight while pregnant (40 lbs) and i was already overweight when i got pregnant with her. well anyway, ive been to my postpartum doctor visit, everything inside is good now. and well ive started an exercising thing and watching what i eat. i exercise a bit everyday. going on a walk with the kids in their stroller adn also 30 minutes or so on my gazelle. well i eat well, such as fruits and vegetables (i love salads) and whole grains. well ive lost about 8lbs in a week. i am not starving myself. i eat enough (at least i feel full) 3 good meals and at least 2 snacks. im breastfeeding my baby adn i read that losing that much is bad. but i dont think shes eating less. not that ive noticed yet. does anyone have an opinion or know if i should do something. i cannot go to a doctor as i have no insurance. i still have my hospital bills because my insurance isnt fixed yet. thanks for any advice/help

You can safely lose about one pound in a week. Any more than that and you risk putting ketones in your breastmilk.

Hi!
I don't think you're losing weight too fast- because (a) you're watching your diet (b) exercising, (c) breast feeding.
When I was preg with my son 5 yrs ago, I gained about 70lbs- which was insane, because I was only 130lbs before I got pregnant... anyways, I was back down to 140 lbs within 3 months- because I did what you are doing- exercising, eating better, and breastfeeding. Breastfeeding helps you lose weight a lot faster than if you don't nurse your baby. I would say if you notice your milk production goes down, or if you start to feel fatigued (more than just new mommy tiredness), then you might be losing weight too quickly.
Follow a sensible diet, you can find all kids of diet plans online for nursing mommies. Make sure you are getting your daily recommended limits of each food group- grain, dairy, fruit/vegetable, etc etc. AND make sure you are getting enough protein every day. Overall, don't really DIET, just eat sensibly. And keep exercising for half an hour to an hour a day, it will help you get in shape, drop some baby weight, and feel more energized.

you didn't mention how much you've lost, but you're probably fine. Beware, at 6-8 weeks your baby will have a growth spurt, wanting to nurse all day long. It makes many women think they've run out of milk because obviously the child is starving. A day or so later the baby sleeps all day and it's all back in balance.
ALSO- around 10-12 weeks the baby will become a more efficient nurser, extracting a full feeding in only 5-10 minutes, which makes many mothers think "OMG- my baby stopped eating, she'll starve" when in fact, she's just sucking stronger.
As far as your health goes, it is normal to lose weight faster when nursing. Especially if you started your pregnancy overweight- suddenly you're eatieng healthier, your body is in "weight loss mode" hormonally speaking and suddenly you're burning tons of extra calories creating breastmilk and caring for a newborn.
Drink tons of water and enjoy your beautiful new Mama body, you are the queen!

I lost 10 pounds in one week after I had my son. I did pretty much the same thing. If you are still eating well and baby is getting his nutrition, then I think all should be ok. If you drop below an ideal weight, you might want to put your baby on a supplement (formula) and get yourself into a higher protein diet.

As long as your milk supply is up and milk is fat and you don't feel to tired, you should be ok. Just don't forget to drink a lot of water and eat well balanced food. And also watch your baby, if she is gaining weight alright, then you are doing great.
(Thats just a personal opinion, I am not a doctor)

As long as you are getting enough nutrition for you and your baby, you should be okay. If you aren't, your body will take the nutrients the baby needs to produce milk and your body will go without. Keep taking your prenatals.
