Dendrochronology is dating wood by tree rings. Trees grow rings each year. In lean years the rings are narrow while in good years they are wide. You can pick drought years from the ring spacings.

Trees in an area have the same spacing of rings so a piece of wood can be dated by comparing the ring pattern with known patterns, rather like comparing bar codes. Old wood has survived in many parts of the world taking dendrochronology back to about 10,000 years.
