Well it's an older movie and I don't really know what your definition of obscure is but if you want a good cop/bad cop movie I would highly recommend LA Confidential. It's got Kim Basinger, Russell Crowe, and quite a few other stars in it.

Okay, so I'm totally into Guy Ritchie films these days...I highly recommend "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels", as well as "Snatch" (you've probably seen at least one of these!). I'm waiting with baited breath for "Revolver" to be available.
I also really enjoyed "Primer", which seemed to be not quite mainstream. I just put "11:14" in my queue...it sounds interesting, but as I haven't seen it, I guess I can't recommend it yet!
"The Machinist" was intriguing, but also fairly disturbing. Christian Bale was almost not recognizable! He does a lot of psychological work, and I have heard good things about "Harsh Times".
Best of luck...it seems to be getting harder and harder to find something that doesn't follow the stereotypical Hollywood "happy ending" plot line.

Have you seen Dementia (also called "Daughter of Horror)? It's a very good old psychological horror movie that shows a night in the life of a very disturbed woman. It is indeed very perturbating and it keeps you thinking a lot after you see it.
It's quite offbeat, but a very good movie!
