new hitches will come with appropriate hardware. if it is something you picked up used, go to home depot and make sure you get a minimum of grade 8 bolts. you want the bolt shank to be as close to the actual size of the mounting hole on your frame so there is little room to slop around. depending on the type of hitch and application, you could need anywhere from 3-8 bolts, nuts, washers, etc...o that is difficult to get you a straight answer.

As Jman said, use Grade 8 bolts and make sure you don't drill oversized holes - the bolts should be a tight fit so they don't wobble in the holes.

Use split lock washers to prevent the nuts from backing off the bolts. You might want to also apply Loctite on the bolt threads for additional insurance.

If you are purchasing the hitch new, the hardware will come with it in most cases.
