I take two things from this saying from a wise man/fool.
1. Do that which you 'need' to do. Honour that drive, that passion in your life.
2. More simply, don't delude yourself. Face reality and own up to that which you are responsible for in your life.
Peace

That to lie to myself would be the worst thing I could do..and I have to be myself..no matter what..if I try to be someone else..I would then lose the real me..and I cannot do that! Not for anyone. I must be true to myself..if not how could I look in a mirror knowing I am a fake..and that would also mean I would be unable to be true to others. I could not live that way. I would not like myself..that is why my name gone..is here I cannot be me here..5 violations..for Q that were not out of line..but others can answer with awful harrassing and degrading words. So to be..True to myself..I must say...
Ciao!

This is a direct reference to the honesty you display with yourself. If you can't tell yourself the truth, how can you know who you really are. It is a place of real self awareness, the good and the bad.
You can't go through life kidding yourself, although many of us do. Once you really know yourself, life is a great ride.

It amazes me how we immortalize others. First and foremost, Shakespeare was an actor.
Can you imagine 500 years from now with some quotes by Reagan, Arnie or Tom Cruise being discussed and taught in the education system.
In terms of philosophy, the quote refers to self-awareness.

if you yearn to be a ballerina and your dad is pushing you to be an accountant go with what you feel. chances are someone wanting to be a ballerina wouldn't make a very good accountant and vice versa -- no matter what advice dear old dad (and everyone else) gives.

Be true to yourself. The worst tragedy in life is kidding yourself.
Good luck!

Ultimately, I decide my own fate and my decisions affect me, so taking into consideration outside factors, do what you really feel is best.
