Honestly it depends on your level of activity.

For example if you are a runner you want a dog that will keep up with you. Bulldogs for example just don't run.

If you want a dog that you don't have to walk twice a day, or you move slowly you want a lower exercise dog.

Some dogs require a lot of mental stimulation - are you willing to go to the park and do obedience training like making the dog go out and circle trees etc... keeping in mind that you will probably end up off leash in a non-off leash area.

Do you want a dog that you can go to an off leash park and socialize with the owners, or if you have kids (or will ever have kids) temperment is VERY important. You want a laid back dog, one who goes with the flow and has no desire to be alpha. (I adopted a high-needs, high strung, pain in the butt dog 7 years ago to save him from being put down, now that I have a toddler it is a nightmare. He isn't getting what he needs because I can't take both out at the same time anymore.)

It honestly has NOTHING to do with the size of a dog, only to do with the temperment and activity level.

So look at your life, your level of activity, your commitment to training, your future lifestyle and then start looking through breeds. Keep in mind you are going to have to do at least one walk a day, and go out to pee at least another two times no matter what dog.

Something VERY small, but i wouldn't recommend terriers as they are barky & very hyper ( i have 2 rat terriers) Chihuhua, Dachsund, Bichon, Papillion, Havense, Maltese, Shih Tzu etc... look on the AKC website for small dogs. Don't get a big dog in an apartment though, thats a hard life for them, they need room to run. I had my Great Dane in an apartment and he went crazy, chewed the walls, my furniture, door frames. Not to mention he ruined the carpet. I had to pay $3k in damages.

Any dogs could properly be a physically powerful condominium dogs, you purely could desire to verify the animal gets the acceptable quantity of exercising if your development does not have a backyard. So until your development has length and or breed regulations locate the dogs that fits you completely.

I would get a poodle or chiuaua, being that they are small and easy to move. They also eat less and don't make as much of a mess. A pug would be fine also but they are expensive and need a least one walk a day.

I think that Shih-zu's are awesome. I love them. I gave two to my Mother as gifts. They are very fun, but not too crazy like chihuahas and poodles. Wonderful companion dogs.

I second the vote for Shih-tzu. They are awesome little dogs!
The only downfall they have is that they are a little difficult to house break!
