Why are you having the attacks?
Is it triggered by the posture or stress? Then you should rethink your career choice.
Is it from trying too hard? Find a sympathetic instructor and get some practice. Breathing for a manikin is no harder than breathing for yourself- with a little experience.
The three things most people mess up are:
- did not tilt the head back far enough
- did not open their mouth up wide enough for a good seal
- the hand on the victim's chin is pushing the mouth closed.
Fix these and breathing is a peice of cake!

Are you trying to do CPR right after you do a skills test or something? A dummy shouldn't be that hard to fill up if you can do the rescues and swim and be ok. The average adult has a lung capasity of about 500 mL. Just keep practicing and learing how your own breathing works, that way you can figure out how much effort you really need to put in to breathing for some one else.

The perosn who said ask your doctor is right on. You need to step back from lifeguarding for now and get your breathing under control.
You have to pass the skills test in order to be a lifeguard and if you eventually are able to control your asthma to a point where that is possible then go for it. If your asthma is too severe and you cannot perform the necessary skills then you cannot be a lifeguard. Lifeguards must possess the ability and skills needed to sustain the lives of the victims they rescue, it's their job. And yes, there are asthmatic lifeguards, so work on getting that under control and go for it.
Good luck!

You so can't be a lifeguard and I'm sorry to break it to you. I have asthma too and this is a condition that makes some activities impossible to do. Try watching neighborhood kids swim for parents.

Talk to your doctor, first. It sounds like you need better control of your asthma. I know a lot of lifeguard who have asthma and still manage to do their job.

I'm sorry to sound prejudiced, but you shouldn't be a lifeguard.
If I'm not breathing because I've drowned and you pulled me out of the water and then left me there because your asthema keeps you for saving my life, well... just imagine how that would look to the crowd of people expecting the life guard to guard my life.....
