my boyfriend suffers from verbal diarohea too!! i love him to bits but sometimes he really says the wrong thing and its hard sometimes to stay patient for him to realise what he has said!! he has really offended me in the past but i know he cant help it.
he does try to think but it wont always work. if you are a quick thinker then you will probably always be this way, if you can turn most of the things you say in to a joke then that can also help you. you seem like a nice guy and the people around you will know that its something you just can control sometimes.
if you try to take a step back and give it a second or two before you answer this will give you enough time to rethink what you were going to say. my boyfriend will always be this way and as much as it can annoy me i love it all the same as he can really make me laugh with it.

I'm nearly FIFTY and I have the same problem! When someone asks me if I can keep a secret I yell "NO!!" I don't WANT to know secret things! I have absolutely no intention of divulging things, it just happens.
I have long considered myself 'tactless' and I hate it -- tact is a trait I very much admire! But my friends all seem to like me the way I am.
It certainly doesn't hurt to keep trying to improve yourself. If you can't think before you speak, perhaps you CAN learn some habits -- like never swearing or saying mean things. Then, when your mouth runs away with you, it won't be in the habit of calling someone a dipstick or worse. Just BANISH foul language.
I also compensate a tiny bit by being extra careful when I WRITE something. Since we communicate by email so much, I can at least try to be tactful when I type!
Good luck!

well, there is a difference between saying what you feel and being tactless,if you are simply stating how you feel and it offends people apologise and forget about it,if you have foot in mouth syndrome and you can't help spewing out all sorts..you may have to look into things a bit deeper..I'm a very confrontational person in the sense i don't feel i should keep my mouth shut in situations when it's best to open it,i do however take great care not to deliberately hurt people..

I suggest chanting the Maha Mantra because it helps one control the mind and tongue perfectly. It is most recommended for controlling the tongue. for info go to harekrishnatemple.com Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By BHaktivedanta Prabhupada- tells the process. I love it.

I have that problem too and I never seem to think before I speak. But you should definitly keep improving. You should always finish what you start.

we are in the same boat I'm 39 and chatter. before I know it I've said something that I shouldn't have said. Maybe one day I'll be a little old wise lady who keeps her mouth shut. ha ha

this sounds like an impulse control problem. i have trouble with this sometimes. what i do is even if i start saying something like that i stop myself mid sentence and if and when someone asks what i was saying i tell them i was talking out of my butt or i even say i don't remember. i know it is lying but it is a step. you will slip up. everyone does it. don't get down on yourself.

President Bush does the exact same thing and he's still the President of the United States! So don't let that bother you too much! ( ^ _ ^ )

You should just keep trying to think before you speak. I learned that the more you do it the more your brain does it.
