OK, this is kind of complicated for me to explain. I have a MAC PowerBook G4 with OSX, most of the time when I am using it do to normal, routine stuff, the thing 'puts itself to sleep' or just kind of acts like I closed the screen with it still on. The power doesn't turn off though. The only way for me to get it to come back up on hte screen is to press the power button though. This happens when I'm using the battery and when it is plugged in. This is now starting to happen more frequently and it is really annoying! Any suggestions on what I can do to stop this? I hope it is just a setting I can mess with.

Thanks!

You would hope there is just one simple reason why this would happen but, in fact, there are a dozen possible reasons.

It could be a hardware failure but it is unlikely. For both of the two examples in the discussion forum linked from other answer, the operating system was reinstalled. Maybe that is the same problem for you, maybe not. Added expansion card or added RAM could also disrupt the way the power manager communicates with the computer.

Create a new admin user, call it "test" or whatever. Logout, loginto the new user. Then do nothing at all except wait for it to go into sleep. If it still sleeps on the job, do an archive-install.

Put in the PowerBook CD (or DVD) and click to install so it will restart to the install disk. Do an "archive and install" while booted to the PowerBook install CD (or DVD). After the archive and install, just wait for the problem to occur again. Does it happen every 5 minutes or only once or twice a day? You might have to wait quite a while. If, for example, it was happening every 15 minutes, give it a couple of hours to see if it happens again. Don't reinstall anything else until you are sure it is normal.

Those aluminum case PowerBooks have always had slow heat dissipation. Be sure it is not buried in a bed cover or resting on a shag rug. It needs a smooth, flat surface under it.
