Yes - you need to look for "portable applications"

Any sensible System Manager would have disabled all the USB ports via (password protected) BIOS to stop virus propagation (and clever Students plugging in bootable USB 'Linux Live' distro's containing 'Rainbow Table' based password cracking software)...

However since it seems in most schools the Students know more than the Staff, you should have no problem - just plug it in and when the 'new drive' icon double click to open it as normal ...

Probably, but you've not said if you are a student or staff, either way it would be advisable to check with your IT dept. first.
