Cam belt or head gasket, if you are buying one, make sure the cambelt is changed as point of sale....

Power steering and head gaskets are the only things I found to be common on Yahoo Answers.
41 hits "Rover 400" search area.
With only 41 hits, might be a good car/truck or whaterver they're called.

Cylinder head failure. It's the metal of the head that goes soft before the head gasket fails. If it's an R, S, T or V reg they seem to be built better.
To be fair nothing else expensive really goes.

try to establish if the engine is Rover,or a Honda hybrid if it pre r reg ,dont touch it ,cos they not liked unleaded fuel ,soft metal i remember.

head gaskets,power steering oil leaks,gearbox bearing s noisey,oil leaks from engine and gearbox,corroded radiators,faulty electrics the list is endless.stay away
