Once when my sister was in the hospital the nurses did not take care of her as I would have liked. They were always chatting or going to lunch. They did not speak to us...not even a hi or anything. I find this rude and uncaring...it bothers me but I never say anything.

I know everyone has a bad day, but I agree with you it's their job to help and care for people and they should do it. Granted I'm not always a good patient, but I've had several rude and b****y nurses. I have learned though that if you say something either to the doctor or supervisor they will eventually get phased out, because you're probably not the only one to complain. I've complained to a doctor before and he got really serious and apologised for how I was treated and then told me I wasn't the first to complain about that person and that she wouldn't be working for them much longer. I don't think all of the nurses who have been rude meant to be though you do have to remember that hospitals are shorthanded and nurses put in long hours, so if they don't say hi don't take it personally.

I'm a nurse and have been on both sides of the nurse's station. I completely agree that some staff can be extremely rude and thoughtless. There should be a survey when the patient leaves the hospital. Make sure to write down any staff you feel was especially rude. If it's the whole staff, say that on the survey. The hospital knows who was working while you were a patient and can easily track them down. The only way a hospital knows about this, is if they see it in writing. Next time-say something-even if only on paper. It's the only way we can affect a change.

YES! I have. Many bad experiences. These days hospitals are seriously lacking in nurses and aides who care about their jobs and their patients. My mom is a nurse, a great one, and she is disgusted by some people who call themselves nurses. We need more compassionate, diligent workers in the healthcare system!

I always speak up; maybe you should try it. Go to a supervisor... not that anything will change..most likely..but at least you can say you stood up for those patients who were being mistreated.

I have been lucky with my own care but we had a terrible experience with my dad.
Before he died he was on a ventilator, and every time they tried to wean him off he would get very agitated. He needed someone to be with him or he got panicky and his blood pressure would sky rocket. My brother and I stayed with him 18 hours a day during the process and he was very calm with us.
The nurses were all marvelous except 1. We had him breathing more and more on his own and the night shift would stay with him so he stayed calm. The 4th night of this process "Rose" was on duty- a nurse with no bedside manner that treated the patients like old shoes. We requested that she not care for our dad but they had no one else. She ended up giving him the full dose of medecine twice that night, because she said she didn't have the time to sit with him and he was too "awake".
Besides the fact we were furious, we had to start all over weaning him from the meds to be awake enough to be weaned from the ventilator. Within 3 days his organs started to fail and we lost him a few days after that.
We refused to allow her in his room again and reported her to her supervisor and the hospital administrator. She was moved to another floor in the hospital.
She may not have had anything to do with his decline, but she definitely was not a help!

She should be reported to administration for her conduct.I am a supervisor at a large medical firm and patient care and friendliness is very important. Its hard enough to pay the bills after leaving the hospital let alone worry about the rude nurse.Call the hospital and speak with administration

When I had my 1st child the nurse kept coming in and saying stuff like " why don't you put that kid down and walk around?" or " boy he cries lots, you should keep him quiet so others can sleep." I was inexperienced as a mother, nervous, upset, and not sure if I can walk around the ward with him or what. Everytime she came in she had something new and rude to say. I cried cause he cried all the time, tiered and disliked her and her rudeness.

Oh yeah. My grandma died because of the hospital personal. Now, I'm terrified of doctors and hospitals. What happened to decent medical care? You should say something though, if you don't like the care she's getting you can report it!

Good luck!

It is against the ethics. That type of people should not become nurses nor the Hospitals should employ such nurses. It is neither good for the patients nor for the hospitals where they are employed..

I have learned to immediately ask for the PATIENT ADVOCATE! they usually start back stepping, but by the time your pushed to ask for one, your probably turning purple and heads coming literally off your shoulders, but every hospital has them and go then,if your able too.
but mean, rude stupid people are every where. it really sux when they are in hospitals , because when people are at hospitals it usually isn`t a social gathering(except the birth of a baby!) it is a time of desperate need, or in pain we need a patient, compassionate understanding medical staff! i completly understand your anger.

Whenever you have a problem like this, tell your doctor so he can correct it. When my mother was in the hospital, I was upset because they weren't getting her up and moving her every day and was concerned she was going to get pneumonia so I let the doctor know and he corrected it. Problem was he went to release her the next day and she had pneumonia and ended up staying in the hospital an extra week.
