All I have to say is GAVIN NEWSOM. (For those who don't know who he is, he is the major of San Francisco.)

Would you vote for someone because they are good looking or because you agree with their views?

He is good looking, but the people of San Francisco are stupid if they reelect him.

You know, though I live in SJ, I have heard Mr. Newsom speak, and I've noticed that when I see him on TV, I get a very negative impression, but when I hear him on the radio, he sounds a bit more reasonable. I think he's actually got too 'plastic' a sort of good looks. Of course, now that he's thoroughly disgraced himself, I don't think it matters much.

I lived 35 years in The City and all I can say is that it's been going downhill in a noticeable way for the last 30 years. It's more of a continuous circus today than it is a truly functional city. And that's too bad but it's VERY difficult to turn something like that around. It's still a beautiful place and great fun to visit, though; at the same time I'm very happy to be living elsewhere.

I don't know if I would call them shallow, but I would call them lazy. Most voters ( especially the younger voters ) base all their political views on what little they see on network news shows or read in mainstream newspapers. As these institutions are 80-85% left-wing liberal, they only report news that fits their leftist agenda(s) and don't mention anything that points out the flaws in their views unless they have absolutely no choice ( and even then, it's a struggle ). Therefore, the lazy potential voter is indoctrinated to left-wing "news" the same way muslims are indoctrinated to hate "infidels", because they are only subjected to one point of view that supresses any disagreement. Funny how our own media portrays republicans and conservatives as "evil" and "intolerant", but whenever you hear instances on college campuses of guest speakers being harrassed and not allowed to speak...it is the republican and conservative speakers who are harrassed by the liberal college activists who don't dare listen to a view that opposes what their socialist professors have drilled into them. Perish the thought they hear both sides of an argument and then make an intelligent decision!

1) Very few Americans voted for Newsom. Only those in San Fran, which is certainly not part of the American mainstream. My guess is that he got most of the male votes there. American voters are shallow because they are human & most people are shallow.

It's vexing that we allow the news media to do our thinking for us. We're too busy to explore any actual issues and prefer our information in "bytes". Some are afraid to be controversial or politically incorrect. Others are one dimensional, only caring for the "one issue" that affects them the most. That can produce some of the weirdest political alliances! I have an in-law in Ohio that worked in a factory all his life and was a democrat no matter what they did. We need to constantly reevalute if the party or alliance we have with a candidate or issue truly reflects our value system.

Look at the American public where we support someone like Paris Hilton who does nothing except corrupt society. Why would we handle voting with a sense of importance. We are an American Idol, Brittney Spears, society with no understanding of the important responsibility of voting.

What I look for in an official is whether he acts/appears honest. If he addresses the issues of the day and sticks to his guns and whether or not they do as they say.

Please don't use San Francisco as a generalization for the entire United States. It is really a different world out there.

Probably because spelling simple words is such a major task for them.
