The spot is directly in the back of his head and has been there since he was about 7 weeks old. It started to peel and the doctor told us to put cortizon cream on it. He said it was a pressure spot and as he held his head up more it would go away. It is still there and he is 4 months old. Now he is telling us to stop the cream and leave it alone because it is a birth mark. I looked it up in all the books I have and tried to look it up on the internet but can't find a direct answer anywhere. Has anyone ever had this problem? No one I know can tell me what it truely is. Thank You.

Most likely a birthmark, on the back of the head near on on the neckline is called a stork bite. My daughter's is really dark, but its gotten lighter. I have the exact same one but its very light and has moved up into my hair now that I'm older. They're extremely common birthmarks to have...so it really irritates me when people say "WHATS THAT!!!!! on the back of your baby's head?!?!" like she's diseased or something.
I always tell them that I start every morning with a smack to the back of my newborns head! then I look at them like they're stupid and proceed to explain.
It may go away, get lighter, or just stay the same. But rest assured its ok.

I thought it was a birthmark...my son has 3 small spots on the back of his head right at the nape of the neck. It has always been there and he is 4 months and it hasn't faded. I would just watch it to make sure it doesn't change in appearance or show signs that it is getting bigger or different texture you know? I think that is a normal Strawberry birthmark =) GOOD LUCK!

My daughter had a mark on the back of her head behind her ear when she was born. It dissolved away by the time she was a teenager. She is 23 now and no more mark. My Granny used to call it a cat mark because I had a cat. Old wives tales, ha, ha. The doctor told me when my daughter was born not to worry about the mark that it would go away with age, and it did. Don't worry.

If it is a strawberry or also known as Hematoma it's undeveoped blood vessels and should fade with age. If it is opened or peeling or anything else other than a red raised spot get another Dr opinion. We can't see so it's really hard to dx.

I have one at the base of my neck & its just a strawberry. My son had them on his head too & they eventually started to fade away. Now of course you can't see them for his hair. I think it was caused by the stress of labor because I'm small & he was pretty big. There's nothing to worry about. He'll be fine & you won't even know its there after he gets more hair!

Where I am from it is called a 'stork bite' and it's perfectly normal--both of my children had that mark when they were born. It should go away as they grow--usually before their first birthday.

When I had my twins, the youngest one had a "strawberry" on the back of her neck and one on her leg. She is 11 now and they have completely faded.
