University of Phoenix is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. Regional accreditation is regarded by some as superior to national accreditation, though for certain fields specialized accreditation may be required.

If professional licensure is a goal, you may wish to check with local licensing agencies if a University of Phoenix degree will meet requirements.

University of Phoenix is not nationally accredited, but does hold some specialized accreditations.

The nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The counseling programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

Note that the business programs are not AACSB accredited:
"University of Phoenix, as an institution, is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission (HLC). HLC and the five other regional accrediting associations provide accreditation at the institutional level for colleges and universities across the United States. However, University of Phoenix has not sought the additional programmatic accreditation for its business programs since organizations like AACSB are designed to promote the characteristics of traditional business schools."

Regional is not better that National, it is simply a different accreditation. Typically if you attend a Regional accrediated school as a freshman, you are going to take a lot of general education type of classes your first year, a Nationally accredited school will have more of a focus on the degree itself, about 70% towards the degree or core classes and 30% towards general ed. and college core. It is simply and unreasonable bias by state run secondary schools, a nationally accredited school has to meet the same standards as a region. Nationally accrediting agencies are recognized by the DOE (Dept. of Education) such as ACICS.

It is regionally accredited but lacks the more prestigious national accreditation.

Being accredited and being respected are two very different things. Read the following article before thinking about taking a class there.
