I don't want to scare you but would like you to be more prepared than I was. Yes they do put a needle in your stomach to draw out the fluid around your baby. This can be painful 1. because your already nervous and you tense up. 2. the needle has to go through a very stong muscle and you feel like the doctors trying to go through some cartilage. I had to have this procedure done because my last baby was not healthy enough and they needed sample to know why. But the very best advice I can give you on this is take someone with you who calms you at your worst moments, bury your head in their chest, try to breath and don't look at the needle or you won't want to do it. Good luck.

I had an amnio a few months back. All the hype about how painful it is...way over rated! It wasn't anything. You have one person that is keeping track of where the baby is on the sonogram...which you can watch. The other person takes a very long but very skinny needle and inserts it into your belly. (NOT THE BELLY BUTTON!) I only felt a slight pinch as the needle pierced the uterus. The doc warned me right before it was going to happen so I was prepared and it was way more mild than my menstrual cramps always were. The weirdest part was when the fluid was being drawn into the tube. The needle vibrated...again the doc warned me this was going to happen so I didn't freak out. The whole thing took less than 5 minutes...about 2 with the needle actually in you.
The risks the others have listed are true and I don't want to minimize that but as for the actual procedure itself it wasn't as scary as I was always led to believe it was!

They should numb the site before they put the needle in you...and yes, its a nice long needle that they put into your stomach. They do an ultrasound to keep track of where the needle is going so they don't hit your baby. There is between a 1 in 200 to a 1 in 400 chance you can lose your baby because of the procedure (a .25%-.5% chance) because it can cause an infection, they could stick your baby somewhere they shouldn't, and preterm labor is also a risk. I've had it done...its not bad, just a little uncomfortable.

I had two children, and because of my fear of needles I opted out of the Amnio test BUT just wanted to tell you they can test you without doing the needle. They did an ultrasound that lasted an hour (they couldn't see the neck of my babies because they were stubborn and only wanted to show us their faces lol) and they tested the fluids and everything that they needed to that way and also they drew some blood.

A big needle is put in your stomach, into your uterus, guided by an ultrasound, and fluid is extracted. If you are below 24 weeks there is a chance of miscarriage, and if your more than 24 weeks there is a chance of the water breaking and you having a premature baby. They make you sign releases because of these 2 things.

I had one with my twins in week 35..no it didnt hurt at all (Just dont look at the needle..close your eyes!!) Its scary but when its done and over your like ...and the hype about that was?
And the stats those people told you are incorrect. I am not exactly sure what they are now but its something like 1 in 2000 NOT 1 in 100 women experience miscarriage or preterm labor. Research the stats online to see the updated ones!!
And its not bad dont worry
