I'm a big fan of Stephen Malkmus. It all started with Pavement, for whom he was the primary songwriter, and was my favorite band until he went solo. I remember the first time I heard the Pavement song Perfume-V (one of the first by them I had ever heard) and the hook came in "she's got the radio active and it makes me feel ok, I don't feel ok" and with the contrast of the vocals to the music I started thinking that I've never heard anything like this before. They were just so different, but accessible. It's hard to explain without hearing them, and Cut Your Hair is a good tune, but it doesn't really display it (it's their pop tune). They go from thrashy to melodic, weird and angular to kind of poppy and kind of classic rock-y. It's just perfect for me, and he has this lyrical quality that is just amazing. You can't tell if he's singing about anything or not, but the connections of words creates this amazing vibe. So, Pavement is amazing (or Pavement ist rad as you may see it, (ie Primus Sucks)) and he ends up going solo, which created many great stories of them kind of melting down on stage where you could cut the passive aggressive tension with a knife and it just gets better (though most Pavement fans would probably disagree with me). He has three solo records that are completely different from each other, each amazing in a different way. His sound has developed and refined, gets more in depth. I really REALLY recomend his record Face The Truth. His most recent, probably his best. It almost gets into a kind of 60s rock feel, with that touch of late 90s indie rock sensibility. He's also got this incredibly glib sense of humor. Makes for between song banter and reading his interviews really fun. Very schmarmy, which I totally enjoy.

Current band : Wilco

Fantastic musicians that came up through the ranks on touring and giving incredible concerts. Wilco can make a simple folk type song or a jamming alt-rock type. Their former band Uncle Tupelo spawned a movement and genre called "No Depression", which formed the basis of alt-country which has the roots in American folk, rock and bluegrass.

I have seen them about 15 times in concert and still love every show..

Joy Divison is worth a mention as well, but they broke up in 1980. But I am still a big fan of thier music work.

Seether baby! They were the first band that I ever had an emotional connection with, I heard them for the first time playing a live set on radio years before they came to America, Shaun Morgan is also the most humble muso Ive ever met. Shortly after their first single came out (69Tea in SA) I met the guy online and he let me interview him, then he complimented me when we met, saying that my questions were the most insightful he had yet been asked. Normally bands are so full of ****, my friends and I hung around at the backstage door for an autograph and the band invited us inside where I shook Shaun`s hand like 5 times. A few days later at another gig he dedicated 69 Tea to us. Awesome guy, Amazing band.

my favorite band is Avenged Sevenfold because their songs doesn't become the kind of songs that you hear so much that you get tired of it and stop listening to it. They can actually play their intruments and the lead singer has the right voice to fit the band's type of music. Also because they have really nice sadish songs like Seize the Day that can make you cry and songs like Betrayed that are great for angry times. Also because they can dress amazing and love their hair!! They have great style and over all they are hot and talented!

I have two. Good Charlotte and Avenged Sevenfold. First off because they rock.
I can relate to a lot of Good Charlotte's songs. It is great to know that there is a band out there that their lyrics I can relate to.
Avenged Sevenfold I just really love their music.

indochine, because they have been around for 25 years & just keep getting better & better!!! sadly, i haven`t been able to see them live, as they are french & only sing in french, so obviously are not too popular here & indeed have never toured the u.s....but i don`t care, they are still #1 for me!!!
