To see how ugly the face looks,crying comes due to sadness or happiness,no matter which one the face changes in its outlook therefore curiosity arises to see the face in its ugliest form.

i dont know many people who do that.

but i would say it so they can see the hurt they feel in their eyes.

They want to see their reaction to the hurt they feel and if they have changed somehow. See if they still recognise themselves even in that state.

My daughter does that. she is 2. I guess she likes to see how different her facial expression is when she is upset. This is fascinating to her.
