Wow I guess the people saying they look cheap and trampy aren't from Ny/Nj.
Anyways I can understand your concern, and it is true that they can damage the nail underneath. However, at dances 90% of the girls have acrylic (sp?) nails. It's one of the fun preparations going out with your girlfriends getting your nails done.

My nails do that too and I have just cut mine down quite short. I do my own french manicures and when the actual nail is short I just do the white tips a bit bigger, it still looks very nice. I would go with your own suggestion of trimming them and putting strengthener on, maybe a another hard top coat as well to protect. I find Avon Gloss Guard pretty indestructible and I have tried a few! If you don't think they are long enough by the time you go to get your holiday manicure, have some acrylic or gel tips done.

One acrylic nails ruin the nails underneath they deprive them of oxygen and need nutrients. And two if one breaks off it hurts really badly and there is always a chance the real nail will come off two (My friend had it happen OWWWW). Third they look fake and are way to much for an 8th grader. Let her grow out her nails and get a french manicure definitely

french manicure on natural nails is best. Acrylics or fake nails of any kind are bad for your real nails if worn for long periods of time. They can weaken your nails and cause infections.
Not to mention they would just look weird on an 8th grader.

Your daughter is pretty young, and because acrylic nails look cheap and almost "trampy" on a lot of people, she should definitely not have them. I think it might be a little inappropriate for her age. A few of my friends have acrylic nails, and they are all in their mid-twenties, and I think it looks a little cheap.
You should have her grow out her nails, and then get a french manicure. It looks classier and more age appropriate.

I like acrlylics on my finger nails.. it last longer and you can get a fill in and it hard to break them too.. and a french manicure always looks good. have you thought about maybe a silk wrap on your nails??
