It was named after the Roman god Mercury. This deity was the messenger of the gods, known for his great speed and mobility as represented by his winged sandals. At room temperature, the element mercury is a liquid. Very few elements have this property. As a result, the element itself was known for its ease of flow and transfer between containers, leading to comparisons to the fleet-footed mythological figure.
