The biggest threat to Social Security/Medicare is undoubtedly the Republican Party and the way they are in-twined with the health-care industry and pharmaceutical industry. You have to remember that before President Bush [the younger] took office there was a Social Security surplus and no crisis over how we were going to pay the baby boomers when they qualified for Social Security/Medicare. Also, remember Al Gore saying that, as President, he was going to put that money in a lock-box and keep it out of the hands of Congress. Well, Al didn't get elected, even though the majority of the people wanted him elected, and George did get elected, because his brother was Governor of Florida, and the Social Security surplus disappeared right along with the rest of our budgetary surplus. Now Social Security/Medicare is so messed up that nobody wants to touch it for fear of making it worse than it already is. As a senior on Social Security/Medicare I can tell you that Bush's Medicare Advantage Plans and prescription plans are more air than substance. Further, they still take a substantial amount of your Social Security check to pay for it all and then you are subject to co-pay after that. Also, not everything is covered or is only covered partially, under certain conditions. I wonder if it would do any good if we threw tea into Boston Harbor again? Probably not; we'd just get a citation for polluting the harbor.

You seem some what confused.
1. Younger workers have no choice but to pay SS taxes. It is taken out of their paychecks, if self employed they get to pay double, and this tax has significantly risen over the last 20 years.
2. Yes their are more people living longer, it is certainly a drain
3. There have been no serious attempts to end SS or Medicare, in fact both programs have been expanded to include those who have not paid in to them.
4. Health insurance companies have nothing to do with government tax policy other than attempting to alter them for their own benefit.
5. Try this, the entire program was built on faulty math models that assumed there would always be more people paying into these systems than collecting from them. Think Ponzi scheme.

Rapidly escalating benefit payouts that are on the verge of outpacing tax revenues. My answer is close to your #2. Young workers cannot refuse to pay SS taxes. Congress will never attempt to end either program. Senior Citizens vote in large numbers. Any Congressman who votes to end either program will get voted out of office. Many people, groups, special interests are against nationalized health care.

Your money has spent maiming and killing Iraqis rather than healing at home. Osama, Sadam and a football team of Godzillas could never come close to damaging America as much as your own government. You could probably have a hospital each if it were not for the American obsession with war.

How do the young refuse to pay? I'm old, and I'd refuse if they asked me.

The scheme can't work mathematically, so there's no way to make it work politically. And no, it isn't working now, either.
