I don't hate those shows but I wouldn't watch them either. Although the fictional judges generally apply sound legal principles to resolve the disputes (so you can learn a little about the law), they inject much more drama than the average real judge would. Obviously, TV is about ratings, not dispensing justice.

Judge Judy

I do. I think these show give the public a false impression of what the judicial system is really like. They are a mockery of the system. It is a game show, not a legal program. The parties are chosen because of their outrageous nature, not the merit of their legal positions. The legal principles applied by the judges may be correct in some jurisdictions, but the situation is set up from the beginning to ensure there is no way the judges could make a mistake.

As an attorney, I don't hate the court shows. But they are so unrealistic that I find them quite irritating. Everyone wants to slam the other party with words, calling them liars and cheats and whatever, rather than dealing with the facts. And most of the time the facts in those cases are really fairly simple, even if the law isn't.

Those cases are a lot like watching people in small claims court without attorneys. But non-TV judges won't put up with the bickering between the parties.

Yes. Those shows are nothing like real life court at all. They're just dramatic TV. They are an insult to what the system of justice truly stands for.

Not hate. But it sure is not the real world. Unfortunately some think it is so when they get hauled into a real court they "act out".

They are just television shows -- not actual depictions of real-world courtrooms. Most attorneys that I know do not watch these shows. Most non-attorneys that I know also do not watch these shows.
