1966 Alabama Quoted by Bear Bryant "his best ever team"
only undefeated team in 66' but denied the title to Notre Dame (9-0-1) because of jealousy of the media. Bama should have pulled off a three peat feat making them national champions in 64' , 65' , 66'. Auburn in 2004 got screwed, Penn State in 94', but not like 66' Bama.
As far as an era, then Florida State 1987-2000. 14 straight top 4 finishes, 2 National Championships, ACC Conference Championship every year since joining in 1992, 11 straight bowl wins, first wire to wire national champion, 2000's USC can't even hold a candle to that, not even half way

You can't compare the athletes of older generations to the bigger/faster/stronger athletes of today, but all eras being equal, and going outside of just a single season, two teams come to mind.
Oklahoma Sooners under Bud Wilkinson (1947-1963) had a 145-29-4 record including a 48 game unbeaten streak.
If you want to look at all divisions...
Division III Mount Union...
Record since 1993 is 200 Wins vs. 7 Losses. 9 national titiles and a record 54 game win streak.

best ever? well i'd have to say OU because of that 47 game win streak they had
or alabama in the 60's and 70's
same for southern cal, mainly in the 70's
the 1980 nebraska team was unstoppable, averaging about 64 points in going undefeated.
michigan and notre dame, both because they have most wins all time...(though haven't done too much lately)
and of course my favorite team ever...bayou bengals of LSU, glad to see they resurrected while i was there, and are definitely here to stay as a nat title contender every year.

Nobody's mentioned any Alabama teams with thier 12 national titles. Maybe none of them were the "greatest" but they all got the job done.

1944 Army. Undefeated and featuring two Heisman Trophy winning running backs, Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard, they destroyed Notre Dame and anyone else who got in their path.

i would have to say 2001-present USC Trojans, never has their been a team so athletically talented as this team, I've only been watching Collage football for the last few years b/c I'm still young but from what i can see from the past, there is really no question

Historically, no one comes close to Notre Dame, with more national champs and Heismans than anyone in history...but recently, it is obviously Southern Cal since Carson Palmer and Pete Carroll...

1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers
No one has dominated like they by spreading their opponents by an ungodly amount.
