Its time to start solids when your child is sitting unassisted, Can pick things up between her fingers and is eager about food.
We started with just small bits from our plate and let him feed himself. Never did any cereal or pureed food. Worked out great.
Rice cereal isnt a very good first food. Its highly processed and infants dont start producing the enzyme, amylase, until much closer to a year old.
Start with FRESH fruits and veggies and then move on to meats... grains should be last.

You are going to start with about a teaspoon of cereal mixed with formula. It is just for fun and experience so don't assume or worry if the baby won't eat it all. Give the baby the solid food about 20 minutes before you would usually give her a bottle, that way she isn't starving, but will be hungry enough to want a taste. Just giver her a little to feel and taste. She will roll it around in her mouth and may swallow a bit, most likely, a lot of it will end up on her chin. Just do this once or twice a day until she starts actually eating the cereal (about a week or so). Then try a different kind of cereal (wheat, oat, rice etc). As she starts eating more and more, (about a month-ish) then you can start giving her a breakfast, lunch and dinner feeding, but she should have a bottle after each (she may drink less though). She can start having tastes of baby food after she has had a couple different kinds of cereal. Start with a really runny consistency and only try one new food every three days (that way you know if something causes an allergy). Start with veggies and fruits and you can add some meat around 7 months or so. Take it slow and remember, babies need breastmilk (or formula) as their main source of nutrition through their first year of life.

You should try looking for this book "Family Circle's Baby & Toddler Food". This helped me alot with my kids. There is also good websites out there that can help ie http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com Your baby will tell you when they have had enought food and yes a full meal plus the bottle will probably be to much. Mix the milk with the food and still count this as the 6oz. Just try little bits at a time and then you will get the feel for how much baby will eat. Start off little and if baby eats it all then you can always make more. Good luck.

I'm a first time mom as well and I know how you feel about winging it. Usually the best time to introduce solids is around 6 months. I would start with rice cereal because that is the easiest on baby's tummy and least likely to cause food allergies. To start out, begin with about a tablespoon of rice cereal mixed with milk or water and then finish off with a bottle. Then gradually increase the amount of cereal over a period of feedings. I would start with feeding her cereal once a day and increase to three times a day until the doctor tells you otherwise. Good luck and hang in there!

start w/ rice cereal. make it very liquidy with breast milk or fomula. nly about a tablespoon or so to start. you just want her to experiment with eating. i used to take her 5 oz. bottle of formula(i also breastfeed) and use that to prepare the rice cereal.i would give her whatever was left to drink.start w/one time a day and when she is used to it,go up to 2 then 3 times a day.then u can start with stage one baby food. choose one food and put a little in a seperate bowl(so as not to contaminate the jar) and feed her the same for a few days to make sure she isnt allergic. then move on to the next food. i started with veggies ist and i have to girls who LOVE vegetables now(my 6 yr. old always asks for more vegetables! dont worry about how much she eats- if you plan on about a tablespoon and she wants more, give her more. have fun!
