We recently had memorial services for Ford and Reagen. All good things were said about both. I'm too young to remember back any further, but I just wonder what president has earned the claim as the worst leader of our country. Or are we not far enough removed to judge?

Carter has been labeled largely inefficient at being President. But it depends on viewpoint. To some, Bush is still a good Pres. To some Reagan or Nixon was Satan To alot of people Clinton is a personal hero while he's considered a bad person by others. It's all very subjective.

But for the purposes of your question I'd probably say Jimmy Carter has the worst in-office reputation which he's been able to repair a little by building houses.

George W. Bush is a lot better than the traitor Albert Gore who should be shot or the Ketchup Queen's husband of Swift Boat fame! George Bush's low popularity rating is a sign that history will evaluate him as better than average. Harry Truman had the lowest popularity rating of any President but history has ranked him among the best of American Presidents. I agre with history's judgement.

The greatest President by far was Ronald Reagan before Lincoln in second place, Washington in third place and Teddy Roosevelt in fourth place.. Ronald Reagan eliminated the Soviet threat and armies without firing a shot! Who would have ever thought that that was a possibility before Reagan?

The worst President was Warren G. Harding with Jimmie Carter in a close second place and Ulysses Grant in third place in the worst ratings.

Nixon in terms of waste of space and corruption. Clinton and Carter easily two of the smartest presidents ever, got a lot of things done domestically and internationally, respectively. Reagan ended the Cold War. Hoover caused the Great Depression, more or less. Jackson could not read or write. Currently by all measures, Bush 2 is the worst president ever, beating out Bush 1, Hoover and Nixon.

being an unpopular president does not make someone a bad president. the tough choices which have to be made by presidents at certain points in time will not always be popular among the public. the decision to make those choices anyway is truly the mark of a great president and a great leader. what good is a president who doesn't have the faith to lead, but elects instead to follow the polls?

people have to be capable of removing themselves emotionally and viewing the larger picture before they can adequately sum up the larger implications of a president's actions. and, you are right, oftentimes, it takes years for the emotion over unpopular decisions to lessen enough for an accurate portrayal to become widely accepted or, even known.

bush, despite all the controversy inherent to his time in office, maintains the support of more than 1 out of 3 americans (not 2, but a higher percentage than 1), which is not bad for a wartime president who was almost immediately faced with an internal terrorist strike upon assuming office.

you would do better to reserve judgment as to best or, worse.

you said you are young and i would suggest you take a critical thinking class if you've the opportunity. it will help you better discern between the truth and the lies among our media, as well as to think for yourself instead of relying upon blanket statements and public opinion for your opinions.

Andrew Johnson hands down did this country the greatest disservice of any president. Letting "reconstruction" following the civil war get so out of hand still causes division today. After him I'm afraid dubya is working on a real close number two.

Jimmy Carter. He was the best president that Panama ever had. Bill Clinton because he was the stupidest liar in recent history. And now George Jr. has managed to embarass his entire family because he has no idea how to stand up and take charge.

well my fine young fellow. there is one word in your question which nullifies the validity of your question. which word you ask?

Before President Bush, who "HISTORICALLY" was considered the most ineffective or worst president of our country?

My friend the world will have to wait another 100 hundred years before this question can be asked.

There is no real consensus on who is the worst, but there is group of presidents who are usually ranked at the bottom. They include: aBuchanan, because he did nothing to prevent the Civil War, Hoover for his ineffectiveness during the early years of the Great Depression, and Nixon for his corruption.
