one beach I go to has coarse sand ~1mm grains

one foot = 12 inches = ~300mm (grains!)

volume = 300^3 = 27 million

But try it for your grain size!

It completely depends on the grain size. If it is really fine you can look at it under a microscope and use something called a stage micrometer to measure them. You can measure several and do an average. The do the same math as already illustrated.
