The USA has grown so big that different regions of the country don't think the same way. The government doesn't represent what people want only a warped version of everything. Should the USA be divided into smaller countries and maybe be joined as a confederation?

Please don't compare it to the civil war because that was a different time period and situation than today. We have a democratic way of doing things today. We can vote freely today.

That's a really interesting idea. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it.

This would cause great insecurity both between the countries (as each would feel the need to stockpile arms to protect its interests from the others) and from foreign countries which might try to use the "divide and conquer" method to take over one or more of the countries.

We tried a confederation before the creation of the current federal system, where each state was essentially a sovereign unit, but it did not work out because each state served only its own interests and did very little to support the confederation.

No, confederations tend to want to break off and go their own way. We had a civil war on that premise and we don't need to repeat the mistake. One thing we could do would be to amalgamate several states into regions and pick representatives for each region. Along with this concept we could also give states more power to govern themselves and give the federal government powers that would be for the good of everyone.

It already is a confederation. The problem is that the federal government (in my opinion) has grew slightly too large in the first half of the 20th century, and then gained some crazy powers in the past 5, but i think that with a little tweaking and a lot of open-mindedness our Federal govt could serve the peoples needs quite well.

No, I don't want to see our country become multiple countries like in Africa. I think we function better as a whole. However, folks have played around the idea of shifting some of the states, like Delaware, Eastern shore Md and part of VA to make the Delmarva area one state, based on reasonable ideas. Since so many family oriented support programs are federally based, you would really upset a whole nation of people to disrupt that.

Each state does have a degree of autonomy. I wouldn't be against the country moving in a 'states rights' direction, but not to the degree of a confederacy (which implies the right to seccession).

Didn't work in the 1860's, but hay, maybe it'll fly this time, NOT! Remember Lincoln's "a nation divided, can not stand" (actually he plagiarized it from the book of Mark in the Bible).
