Be a aware! This will make many angry.
If everyone could "SAFELY" cut his speed in half.....
Every time we go ANY WHERE, we would automatically lower our fuel needs. Just think about it for a minute.
If we all took a few minutes longer to get where we are going, it would automatically force others to slow up as well.
Other factors: Fewer accidents. Lower productivity.
And I am sure you can think of a lot more.
The down side? A lot of angry drivers who won't cooperate.
Your view?

It's all about profits. You can take them away if you:
#1. car pool to the store, to the congregation .
#2. do not go out on the weekend but stay home just 2 week ends in a row.
#3. drive the speed limit
#4. use your cruise control
#5. experts say all cars are made to be used with regular gas...so stop paying for premium or mid grade gas.
#6. have your car checked out for air filters, etc to get the best fuel efficiency.
#7. the cheapest gas is on Thursday...fill up once a week

No, this is not logical or necessary. We need to get alternatives such as E100 (100% ethanol) and biodiesel, etc. in place ASAP!!! Cutting back won't solve the real problem at hand. If you want to send a message to oil co's in the meantime though, everyone should stay home Memorial Day Weekend instead of using extra resources for holiday travel. But as you said, people don't easily cooperate, this is why we're in this situation.

Your right!! But you forgot about not filling up the tank to the top. This will send a message to the big oil gluttons that they will not get their Billion dollar rake in. I only get regular half full in my tank. I also go only where necessary to save fuel.
Spartawo...
P.S. I wish I had a hybrid car.

I think that if all of us stayed home for just one day, gas prices would fall. Remember the good ol' days when gas was $.98??? You have some good views on it too.
