Alcohol .+ a red dye. Replaces mercury in some thermometers. Can also be blue or green.
Mercury thermometers have not been phased out, they're still in use in scientific work.

The red stuff is colored alcohol.

Thermometers used to be made with mercury inside them. However, thermometers are no longer made with mercury because of its toxicity. Instead another liquid had to be used that noticeably expands when the Temp rises. That is why alcohol was chosen. But since alcohol is naturally clear, manufacturers add a dye (usually red) in order to make it easier to read the thermometer.

This liquid is sometimes colored alcohol but can also be a metallic liquid called mercury. Both mercury and alcohol grow bigger when heated and smaller when cooled. Inside the glass tube of a thermometer, the liquid has no place to go but up when the temperature is hot and down when the temperature is cold.

It is alcohol with red dye. mercury is opaque. If you look at the red solution you will see that it is transparent, hence the red dye. Mercury needs no dye because it is opaque.
