we could all revolt and burn down gas stations across the land, but then we would all be in prison, so to answer your question realistically we cant do crap and the oil companies know it.

There is something realistic we can do, but too many people are too lazy, selfish, or unable to do it. I'll tell you one thing, a lot more of these people are lazy or selfish, rather than unable! But of course everyone claims to be in the "unable" category. Sure. Whatever.
In any case, the secret is simple: use less gas. Stop driving when you don't have to. Stop buying vehicles with bad gas mileage. Take the bus or subway when it is available. Ride a bike. When you do drive, drive slower, and keep your car well maintained.
Now let the excuses begin.
Personally, I am glad the prices are going up. My car gets good gas mileage, and I take good care of it. I don't live in a town with good public transportation, but I use it when I can. I often walk if I need something from just up the street. That said, most people will come up with some lame excuse, then whine because they are "under the thumb." No one is under anyone's thumb. Gas prices are high because idiots are willing to pay for it. I get a good giggle when I see some idiot paying $90 to fill up their Tahoe or Expedition. Serves them right for being ignorant.
And boycotting gas for a day doesn't work! I can't believe people are still on here saying that. See below for more information.

Do you honestly think that our government is controlling gas prices? We have a group of corporate giants, the oil companies, and they have a product that we are addicted to, gasoline and petroleum. They set the price wherever they want it because we don't have another source from which to get it. We're stuck, that's for sure. But it's not the government that has us stuck. It's the oil companies.
We get most of our oil from Canada, Venezuela and Mexico, not the Middle East. Who should we be angry with for these prices?

Stop using so much gas.
Move closer to your job. Buy a smaller vehicle.
Ride a bicycle to work, if you can. My friend started riding his bike once each week to work. 15 miles each way. Good exercise.
