Try the below steps....

1) Each computer needs to have a different IP address and the same subnet mask. One should be something like IP: 192.168.0.100 subnet: 255.255.255.0 and the second would be something like 192.168.0.110 subnet: 255.255.255.0

2) Set your workgroup name on the two computers. This needs to be the same name on both computers.

3) Turn on file and printer sharing. This must be done on both computers.

4) Put the IP address of the other computer in the firewall of the computer or turn off the firewall all together until you get the connections working. This must be done on both computers

5) Enable the share option on the folders you want to share. This must be done on both computers. These folders will be the ones that show up in the Network Neighborhood on the computers in your network

You have the hardware connection, but you also need to establish the software connection to enable the two computers to communicate.

I'm taking a guess that you're using XP? If not, do a web search on "home network direct cable connection" and find the instructions for your operating system. For XP, read: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814986
