An 18th Century Republican is nothing like a Republican of today. Had you paid better attention in social studies you might actually have known that. Nice try though.

Shure. Not that the Republicans should feel too smug about it. Washington had no party. Jefferson was a 'Democratic-Republican' (the opposition party to the Federalists, and not actually the Democrats or the Republicans). And, while Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt were both Republicans, both parties have moved to the left in many ways since thier time.
Indeed, even claiming Reagan as a Republican is pushing it - he started as a Democrat, and, over the years, found his own party had moved so far to the left that he found more common ground with the Republicans, and changed parties.

The only people who believe Jefferson founded the Democrat party are democrats.
Who are the great democrats? FDR and JFK. Mt Rushmore was designed in the mid 1920s, before FDR or JFK were elected.

Stupid question seeing that Thomas Jefferson is considered the founder of the Democratic Party. Even though it was called the Democratic-Republican Party back then it is the same party as today's Democratic Party. You should spend more time brushing up on your history rather than trying to act so smart with conservative Republican talking points. In fact, I do not see any conservatives up on Mount Rushmore. Roosevelt and Lincoln, even though they were Republican, they were both liberal progressives. Remember, when they were serving the Republican Party was the liberal party.

Doubtful, but the way I look at it, Mt. Rushmore is kind of like a giant 'wanted' poster. In that context, I'd view it as a perfect place to put almost any republican!

I think so, as up to that time and since this Nation has not had a Democratic President worthy of even being in office. But, since then we have only had one Republican President that is worthy. That President is Ronald Regan, and he should be added.

I am glad there are no democrats on Rushmore, as that monstrosity of a sculpture desecrated a sacred native american site. Typical of republicans to show a complete disregard and a lack of respect for other persons.

Thomas Jefferson was the founder of the Democratic party (At first called Democratic Republican party and later the Republican was dropped) and George Washington claimed no party so that just leaves Lincoln and Liberal Republican Teddy Roosevelt.

The reason for the selection of these presidents was that they were the greatest unifier's of our country in times when this country stood for the freedom of man and in the face of perils.
In this day and age it is really hard to find Americans that share the same vision and meaning of freedom as our predecessors once did. I believe our armed force's bothers and sisters, both serving and veterans, are the only ones who share and understand that vision, and not blindly.

"Republican" and "Democrat" meant very different things when the monument was created. So, no. Mt. Rushmore cannot provide commentary on today's political situation.

Shows how much you know about history. Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt were all considered liberals in their day. The Democratic and Republican parties are not the same now as they were 100+ years ago. Maybe you ought to consider taking an American history class or two.
