It has nothing to do with 14 days from the beginning of your period. Ovulation happens 10-16 days before the onset of your next period. Figure out when your next cycle is due and count back 16 days--this starts your fertile period and ovulation is most likely to happen at about 14 days til your next period.

You always count from the first day of your period to the first day of your next period. Women can have varied cycle lengths, some 28, some 30, some 35 or longer. The most fertile time is only around the 14th day if you have a 28 day cycle. It's usually mid-way through your cycle but even women who have regular cycles can ovulate earlier or later in the month.
The length of your period (how long the bleeding lasts) doesn't affect how you "count the days" when you're looking for your ovulation.
Charting your periods, temps, etc. is a good way to tell when you're ovulating and I've heard using ovulation tests work really well.
Good luck!
