If I am 60 years old and a time machine is invented and I go back in time to when I am 20 years old and stop a man from wrecking into my friend and killing him will my 20 year old self have to go back in time when he is 60 and continue to stop it, or do you only have to go back and alter time once?

Time machines a time dilation theories have been postulated. However none have resolved the fact that man's life eventualy comes to an End.

By stopping the killing the first time your 20 year old self will then grow to be 60 with your friend (though this change may cause other things to happen) so he will not have to go back and stop your friend from being killed at the age of 20.

According to time travel ala Back to the Future, no, you will have changed the present by changing the past. But, the real question is will you cease to exist because the 20 year old you will live an entirely different life than you did. And how do you feel about having 2 yous running around...you without a friend and you with a friend. So assuming that after you stopped the man from killing your friend, you return to the present, your friend will know both of yous, but which is the real you?

I recently saw a film, Butterfly Effect (1 & 2), they deal with time travel differently. You automatically return to the new present, but you have no memory of your new past after the change takes place....wierd.

No, you would only have to go back the 1 time. But remember that changing that 1 thing, changes everything else from that point forward, so your 60 year old self would be going back to a different future than the one you left.

Every time you go back things would change. How do you know your friend would not commit some crime on you?
