A descriptive term for that property of a body which resists change in its motion. Two kinds of changes of motion are recognized: changes in translational motion, and changes in rotational motion.

Inertia is the tendency for things to keep doing what they are doing. An object at rest will remain at rest until a force acts on it. An object in motion will remain in motion until a force acts on it.

When a sattelite (moon, asteroid, planet, star...) passes within the gravitational pull of another sattelite the forces of gravity will alter the montion of one or both of those objects and will alter their path because of an outside force: gravity.
