What would cause a fuel relay switch to go bad?
having trouble with my 99 tahoe not starting and have changed the fuel pump and still had trouble then found that the new replaced fuel relay has gone bad. What would cause this to happen, as soon as we changed it the car had fuel pressure again and started right up. The is something from point A to point B that is causing this to happen. Any suggestions? The friend working on this has never seen one burn up.

Check the circuit to and from the relay for shorts or even a bad ground which will give you an intermittent problem. Wiring issues are always no fun to diagnose and sometimes, brand new items are defective but stick to the basics--power in and power out, relay power and ground...grounds are often the most overlooked trouble with circuits especially on older vehicles. Try bypassing the wiring in question and see what results.

Hi,well if you changed the fuel pump & the engine still did'nt run & you found your relay burnt, the most likely cause of the burnt relay was the fuel pump drawing too much current. If this happens again, the terminals in the underhood fuse panel (which the relay is connected) are loose & not making a tight fit on the relay (causing arcing) Good luck

You may have an electrical issue within that circuit, but I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point. Make sure that the relay that you replace is done with one right from the dealership. You'll pay more, but it's worth the extra money. If it fails again, then find a good tech that can figure out what is going on.

This sound greater like the feared PGM relay it is placed below the sprint above the glove container. Fails while motor vehicle indoors is heat. Then starts off returned while the interior cools down. it is brought about by potential of a defective solder weld. restoration is to substitute the relay
