Hair straightening and breastfeeding?

I am planning to get the permanent hair straightening done but I am still breastfeeding my son. Is it safe to get it done or should I wait ?

Kellymom.com (an excellent breastfeeding resource) confirms this: "There is no evidence that hair care products (dyes, permanents, or hair relaxers) used by a nursing mom have any effect on her breastfeeding baby."

There is no evidence that hair perms, straightening and dying pass any chemicals to the baby during breastfeeding, but there is no evidence that it doesn't either. It can be risky. I would wait. If you really don't want to, pump a couple of feeding worth of milk and then just have Dad feed the baby the first two feedings after you have your hair done while you pump and discard that milk. Then you can go back to nursing, that's what you would do if you were going to have surgery etc. When nursing, it is always best to wait to do anything like that. Good luck.

you better wait. they'll be using powerful chemicals on your hair to have it permanently straight. they'll penetrate hair roots, and your body that could affect the taste of your breasts' milk. in the meantime, why not buy straightening iron for your hair. same results!

go ahead and get your hair done- it won't have any effect on your breastmilk. It doesn't absord in great enough amounts into your bloodstream to have any effect at all. AND it might make you feel once again like a hot momma... lol, have fun!

I don't see how that will affect your baby i'm sure it would be fine. They just don't want mothers to be doing drugs and drinking that will affect the baby cause your inhaling that will get in the milk. even with certain food could give baby gas.
